Why You Shouldn’t Be Worried About Austin Ekeler in Fantasy

Chargers running back Austin Ekeler had a disappointing start to the 2020 season, at least for fantasy managers. Ekeler rushed for just 84 yards and had only one reception that went for three yards, totaling up to 9.7 fantasy points in PPR formats. This is coming from a guy who was arguably one of the best pass catching backs in the NFL, racking up 92 receptions, almost 1,000 receiving yards and eight receiving touchdowns in 2019. Ekeler was somebody that many fantasy managers, especially in PPR formats, expected to be a star this season, but with this disappointing Week One performance, is it already time to hit the panic button on Ekeler?

I would argue that it is far too soon to be worried about Ekeler because what I didn’t mention was that Ekeler had 19 rushing attempts, a career high. He was very efficient as well, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. If Ekeler continues to get this many touches and stay efficient, he will still bring a tremendous amount of fantasy value, even if he sees a smaller role in the passing game. Chargers Head Coach Anthony Lynn has said “the new scheme, primarily the increased quarterback and pocket movement, will limit checkdowns to running backs,” adding that “it’s still a priority to get Ekeler touches moving forward.” The Chargers should soon realize that when you have one of the best pass catching running backs in the NFL, you should probably utilize him in the passing game no matter how much your gameplan or playbook have changed. Ekeler is just too talented of a back to be left unused in the Charger’s passing game. Since it’s likely that the Chargers get blown out of the water on Sunday versus the Chiefs, Ekeler should expect to see some more receptions, a plus for all fantasy managers who have him on their teams. Fantasy managers shouldn't be concerned about Ekeler, especially after just one week of play. If we still see little to no receptions from Ekeler in Week Two against the Chiefs, there might be some reason for concern. For now, though, expect Ekeler to give you RB1 value this week.\
